I have made some new batches of soap that are curing and will be ready mid November. I will be adding more items as they become available. I am hoping to have some hand sewn items listed in November.

DH and "THE GREAT PUMPKIN"
Well today we finished harvesting what we could from our vegetable garden. I managed to get 2 large pails full of beets (one I took down to the neighbour) and I will pickle the rest for ourselves.
We got 2 bushels of onions and about 6 bushels of carrots. I picked out the good ones and the rest will go to the horses. We decided that the garden we put in this year was a little too big so next year it will be smaller. DH brought the rest of my pumpkins out of the field. The biggest one we call the "Great Pumpkin". I will carve that one for halloween and a few smaller ones too. It is nice to put the garden to rest for the winter. DH is out working it up now. He got his winter wheat planted yesterday so all there is left to do is combining the corn and then plowing. Then winter can come. The colours are beautiful right now so DH and I took the dogs for a walk through our bush this morning. It is also double digit temperatures this week, but rain is expected at the end of the week.

HARVEST APPLE PIE
I have had a special request for the recipe for my apple pie so here it is.
Pastry For One 2-Crust Pie
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup shortening
5-6 Tablespoons cold water(or just enough to make dough hold together)
- Cut shortening into flour and salt with knife or pastry blender until it is the size of peas.
- Add the cold water, a little at a time, and mix thoroughly with a fork.
- Shape into 2 balls.
- Roll one on floured board and line the pie plate.
- Roll out the other ball and use for the top.
APPLE PIE
Line pie plate with pastry
Sprinkle 1 rounded Tablespoon of flour on the botton
Fill with thinly sliced peeled apples, heaping more in the centre
Sprinkle 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice over the apples
Pour 3/4 cup of sugar over the apples and shake down so it goes through the slices
Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg
Top with upper crust. Brush with milk or cream and sprinkle on a little sugar.
Bake at 450 degrees for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 30 to 40 minutes until apples are tender.
ENJOY!

A GREAT SOUP RECIPE
This is a soup recipe of my own. Mercantile Gatherings (my favorite magazine) published my recipe for this in the 2007 Christmas Issue. I was so proud! Brenda did such a nice job on the layout....she used a whole page! My friends that have tried this just love it. I thought I would share this on my Blog seeing all of the ingredients are in season right now. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
OLDE CROW CURRIED PARSNIP, PEAR AND APPLE SOUP
2 Tablespoons butter
1 medium onion chopped
1 celery stalk sliced into small pieces
1 pear, peeled, cored and sliced
1 apple, peeled, cored and sliced ( I used macintosh)
4 cups of chicken stock
1 cup of apple cider
1 cup of milk or cream
1 bay leaf
8 parsnips peeled and sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon curry powder
½ teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon pepper
In large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir In the onion, pear, apple and the celery. Cook until they are softened-approximately 7 minutes.
Stir in the chicken stock, cider, parsnips, salt, curry, bay leaf, nutmeg and pepper.
Cook on medium high heat until vegetables are soft, approximately 25 minutes.
Remove from heat, remove bay leaf and puree” with stick blender or food processor until smooth. Add the milk or cream near the end .
ENJOY !

HARVEST THYME
Well harvest time is upon us at our little farm. DH and I spent this morning walking through the soybean field getting all of the volunteer corn out of the field. What a job!! We sure got our exercise today. The combine is ready, the gravity wagons are beside the field, all we need is some good weather to finish the drying that our beans need. They are calling for showers on Friday, but the beans are not ready to go tomorrow so it is just a waiting game now. I tell you, this farming is so unpredictable, you think you can do something, then the weather changes. It is so frustrating.
I am home from BC. and it was so nice to see all of my family again. We all got to go out for dinner and several breakfasts together at the White Spot (my favorite). It was nice to see my Dad and my sisters who I hadn't seen for 2 years, and my brother-in-laws and my niece and nephew. It was really nice that I got to spend at least part of Thanksgiving with them. I even got to visit my favorite store, The Weathered Rooster. The store looked fabulous, it was full of autumn items. Judy does such a wonderful job of selecting such wonderful things for her customers. She just celebrated her 25th year in business. I just love it there. I even got an awesome witch. I have her in my kitchen on an old chair. She is perched on top of a pumpkin from my garden. My sisters took me to some really nice Quilt Shops in the area too, and of course I had to get some fabric for my stash. I just wish we all lived a little closer together.

HARVEST BAKING
Well, I decided I wasn't going to the Fair today. DH said that he would like to go, but not today, tomorrow. He is working on his hangar and it is coming along great. I baked him an apple pie as he is working so hard. He just loves homemade apple pie. He can tell if I cheat on the crust too :)
He knows when I buy the store bought pie shells. This one was all from scratch.
HARVEST TIME
Well Harvest Time is finally here. This is a picture of one my displays on my side porch. Our fall Fair is on this weekend and the weather is cool and rainy. I might go over this afternoon and have a wander around for a couple of hours. It is a small fair, but they always get a huge turn out. I love looking at all of the gourds and pumpkins.
My pumpkin patch turned out really well this year. I even got 5 giants and about 20 jack-o-lantern sized pumpkins and even a couple that grew in my manure pile behind the barn:) It is the beige coloured one in the picture.
We have been working on DH's airplane hangar. We got the roof trusses up on Thursday. He is out there today finalizing the placement of them and then he needs to add some more braces then he will be ready for the steel. He is also working on my summer kitchen at the back of my house. He framed the window and the door opening. We got a pine door and a pine screen door the other day and I got them stained last Thursday morning. The findlay oval cookstove was picked up last Monday, so we have that home now.
I am off to British Columbia next Tuesday bright and early to visit my family. I am looking forward to it. I will get to visit my favorite store, the "Weathered Rooster". I just love that store.
It is "Primitive Heaven". LOL. My sisters are going to take me around to some nice Quilt Shops too, and of course lunch at the "White Spot". Another favorite of mine. I'll be flying home the following Saturday on the Red Eye flight and will get back to my town at 6 am. next Sunday. It won't be a long visit, be at least it will be a visit. I will be back to help DH with the Harvest. I am wondering if he will surprise me when I get back. He loves to surprise me. He might just do some work on my summer kitchen while I am away :)

BUTTERNUT SQUASH CAKE
This is a recipe for Butternut Squash Cake with cream cheese icing :)
It is so good. I am making this for our Autumn "Ladies of The Evening" at Quilts and Calicos in Exeter. This is a potluck supper and sewing night. There is usually around 12 ladies who come and we have a nice dinner and sew a project and just have a good time and a lot of laughs. Funny, when I drink a glass of wine, I sew better....go figure!!! :)

FINDLAY OVAL CIRCA 1930
Well my little trip North paid off yesterday. I purchased a Circa 1930 Findlay Oval woodburning cookstove. The place had some beautiful stoves. DH and I will have to take a trip up there one of these days to bring it home. I had a great time yesterday. Stopped at a few Antique shops on the way home, stopped for lunch and got some groceries. I will post a picture when I get it home and have it installed.
I have spent all morning blanching sweet corn, taking off the kernels and putting them into freezer bags for the freezer. We are going to have enough corn to last through the winter. I can use it to make my chicken and corn chowder soup. I still have lots more beets to process. Then there is the carrots. The chilli sauce and jams are all done for this year. It will nice to get all of this freezing and canning out of the way. DH and I are both doing about 10 different things at once.
He is building his hangar for his airplane and I am renovating my porch into a summer kitchen. We both have other stuff on the go also, like the canning, lawn cutting, chopping firewood for the winter and then DH will have to harvest his crops for the season. You don't have to look far for a job on this farm.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Well today I went in to write my entrance exam for College. I was so nervous about it, I never slept at all last night. They gave me 4 hours to complete the test, but I had it finished in just under 2. They called me this afternoon and told me that I had passed with flying colours so I was VERY happy! I never thought I would be going back to school at 53. Oh well, I guess it is never too late. I will be taking Internet Graphic Design. I have taken a few night courses and I really like it, so starting in November I will be going full time for 1 full year.
I am going North tomorrow to look at Woodburning Cookstoves for my summer kitchen. Hopefully I can find one at a reasonable price. I plan on hitting the road around 7 a.m. as it is almost a two hour drive. I think I will stop at a Tim Horton's on the way up and grab one of those sausage breakfast sandwiches :) I just love them!
On the way home, I'll be able to Stop at Quilts and Calicos Quilt shop in Exeter and pick up some fabric for Ladies of The Evening next Friday night. It is potluck supper, wine drinking and sewing from 5 p.m. until midnight (if you can last that long...LOL). Last year, my sister was visiting me from B.C. and she got to come with me. She had a great time, lots to eat and a lot of nice ladies to sew with. We do this in the spring and fall and I don't think I have missed one yet.
Well I had better get off of this computer, I have to get up early.

RENOVATING THE BACK PORCH
I have started doing renovations on my back porch. I will be turning it into a summer kitchen. DH will be helping of course, I am not that handy LOL. Right now the porch is mostly glass, but I will end up with only three windows. We will be putting board and batten pine on the outside and pine on the inside walls and the ceiling. A wood burning cookstove will be going in for heat and baking bread and doing my canning. There will be a huge primitive cupboard about 6 feet tall against one wall to keep all of my pots and pans and canning equipment. The cupboard will be painted a dark cranberry colour (my favorite) and aged of course. The floor is cement and I will be painting it a caramel colour to match the inside of the house. I have to find an antique door that will fit too. Of course there will be a screen door also. I already have 3 old windows in the basement that we can use. We also have to replace the roof as it leaks like crazy, so it will be brown steel. I just can't wait for this.
I have been pickling beets all day today and I will probably be going until late tonight. I can't believe how many beets that we grew this year. The pumpkins are coming along too. I think I will have to put a sign out at the road....Pumpkins for sale! I even planted some of those Giant ones!! :)
DH had all of his recreational aircraft association members (RAA) over last night for a meeting in his shop. He got to show off the airplane that he has been working on for the past eight years. I think they were all very impressed. I couldn't believe there were around 50 men in his workshop. I spent all morning yesterday baking banana bread, cookies and squares for their coffee break.
I have also finished the items for the "Harvest Swap" I am very pleased. Just some finishing up then I can mail off the package. I liked the main item so much that I had to make one just like it for myself.
I have to go on Friday to write the entrance exam for College :( I have been trying to study math, but it has been 35 years since I was in school. I am not looking forward to it.
Well back to pickle some more beets!

WHAT A DAY!
What a day today was. First off, with the humidex it was like 45 degrees celsius. It was so hot!
This morning, I harvested all of my green beans from the garden, cleaned, cut, blanched and put them in ziplocks and froze them. This afternoon DH and I baled hay and then we put it up into the loft. That is the hay done for this year. Yesterday, DH combined our oats and spread them all out on a huge tarp to dry. After supper, we bagged them all up. That is old fashioned farming for sure! I think we both lost about 5 pounds today.
Yesterday, I judged a horseshow in Ingersoll. It was so hot that it was unbearable. The horses were pretty hot too, so myself and the other judge did not work them very hard. We just worked them long enough to see what we needed to see. At the lunch break, an Amish horse and buggy pulled in to the show grounds and set up a table and sold eggs, homemade bread, pies, tarts and fresh vegetables. Of course I couldn't resist. I had to buy some of that homemade bread and some pecan tarts. I was joking with the competitors, telling them that the show won't resume until I have done my shopping.....LOL. Hopefully the weather will cool down soon. Can't wait for fall.

Breakfast Smoothie
DH and I were on the road before 8 a.m. this morning and off to Park's Blueberries. We arrived just after 9 a.m. and I am so glad that we got there early. It was sooooo hot today. By 10:45 we had almost 20 lbs. of blueberries picked. Some of those berries were as big as grapes. We got weighed in and paid for them, then we went into their restaurant where they also sell all kinds of cookbooks, giftware and frozen pies, berries etc. We had some lunch and it was so good. I had the cream of cauliflower soup with a scone and DH had the blueberry french toast. We both had to have a piece of homemade blueberry pie for desert too. Couldn't pass on that!!!
I ended up buying some blueberry scones to take home and some blueberry buttertarts (to die for).
I just finished washing and freezing all of those blueberries and I will now have a supply over the winter for our breakfast smoothies. Blueberries are so good for you, I use them in our smoothies every day. I thought I would share the recipe, as it is very healthy and it gives you lots of energy, even at my age....LOL.

HARVEST SWAP
I received an email from Char from the PICKLED PEPPER PATCH on Tuesday with the name of my swapping partner. I have started making the things that I will be sending to her. I was pleasantly surprised to see that she is also from Canada. British Columbia to be exact. That is so funny.....all of my family is out there, and so is my favorite store, "The Weathered Rooster". I am really looking forward to this as Autumn is my favorite time of year. I really enjoy creating things for this season. I just hope she will like everything. I know it is something that I would like :)
I finally finished the Website that I was doing for the Quilters Guild that I belong to. It took a lot of time, but I think it looks awesome!! http://huronperthquiltersguild.webs.com/
DH says that I am turning into a real computer Geek....not! I am afraid I have a long way to go before you can call me that. I really love working with computers.
I have been working in my flower beds all week. The hollyhocks are coming to an end :(
I just love the garden when everything is in full bloom. Now I can think of fall mums and pumpkins....I just love those things! I guess unemployment isn't that bad, it gives you time to do the things that you really like.
DH and I are getting up really early tomorrow morning and going blueberry picking. I will be freezing some for use over the winter. I told him I would buy him lunch as they have a really nice little restaurant there. Lots of things made with blueberries.

Fanshawe Pioneer Village
London Brewery
Replica of 1828 London Pioneer Brewery purchased
by
John Labatt in 1847.
Built circa 1871. Fanshawe Hamlet
Purple Hill Loyal Orange Lodge No. 817
Built in West Nissouri Township circa 1880
Below is the Denfield General Store. This was built in circa 1877 in Denfield, Middlesex County.

Yesterday I visited a great place called Fanshawe Pioneer Village. It consists of buildings that date between 1820 and 1920. They have all been moved from their original locations and restored as close to original as possible. It was just wonderful seeing all of these buildings and all the contents in them. Even the people that work there are dressed in vintage clothing. They had vintage furniture, cookstoves, antique cookware, etc. etc. in all of the buildings. They had a great little cafe' too that I just had to check out. Everything they serve is made from fresh produce that they grow in their 2 acre garden. They even bake their own bread. On special weekends, they serve buffet dinners, eg. for Thanksgiving you can get a Turkey dinner with all of the fixins. I ended up having their homemade potato leak soup with homemade bread and their house made lemonade. I really enjoyed it. I got a few nice pictures of some of the buildings. This is a must see if you ever visit London, Ontario.

Sunflowers, Sunflowers, and more Sunflowers
I just got home from Brandon, Manitoba. I was there for 5 days to Judge the Appaloosa National Horse Show. I had a wonderful time and worked with some wonderful people. There were so many great quality horses to Judge. I am glad to be back home to my husband and all of our animals. I am sure they missed me as much as I missed all of them. My garden grew like crazy while I was away. I have beets as big as grapefruits so I know what I will be doing all next week
:(....canning beets. DH planted a ton of sunflowers this year and of course I had to cut a few to put in a mason jar in the kitchen. I just love them and I like to enjoy them inside and outside.
