DH and "THE GREAT PUMPKIN"

Well today we finished harvesting what we could from our vegetable garden. I managed to get 2 large pails full of beets (one I took down to the neighbour) and I will pickle the rest for ourselves.

We got 2 bushels of onions and about 6 bushels of carrots. I picked out the good ones and the rest will go to the horses. We decided that the garden we put in this year was a little too big so next year it will be smaller. DH brought the rest of my pumpkins out of the field. The biggest one we call the "Great Pumpkin". I will carve that one for halloween and a few smaller ones too. It is nice to put the garden to rest for the winter. DH is out working it up now. He got his winter wheat planted yesterday so all there is left to do is combining the corn and then plowing. Then winter can come. The colours are beautiful right now so DH and I took the dogs for a walk through our bush this morning. It is also double digit temperatures this week, but rain is expected at the end of the week.

  1. Wow, would I love to carve one of those big pumpkins! Look great, Janet. So nice to have such a productive garden, it must be very satsifying. Enjoy the warmer weather, I have a feeling we are all in for a cold winter!

  2. Hi Nancy.
I think we are in for a cold winter too :(
Yes, it is so nice to have a productive garden, lots of work though, keeps us in shape! Next year we may build an underground root cellar so we can enjoy the harvest all year long.

  3. Hi Janet. Boy, those are some great looking pumpkins! Should be lots of fun carving one and will look great as a Jack-O-Lantern. A root cellar will be perfect for all of those lovely vegetables you are getting out of your garden. Home grown veggies are so delicious and as Nancy has said, very satisfying to know you have grown them yourself. Great picture!!

    Love, Karen
